Gingerbread frenzy

Nothing makes a more impressive centerpiece during the holidays than a  gingerbread house.  This is a pre-baked gingerbread, a gift given to us from one of Dan's Calculus student.  I sure did enjoy putting them up together piece by piece.

Ang totoong buhay sa America

  • My mood:
  • Music: Tatoo

card, ilaw, tubig, insurance, bahay at iba pa.

Thinking of going back to school?

I might as well post a copy of the letter I sent to Sarah. To those of you who wants to go back to school or planning to enroll for a nursing program in the U.S., here are some personal infos and experiences I'd like to share.

First and foremost, have your sealed TOR from Pinas on hand... If you don't have,  then you need to get it and the ff:  (1) SEALED Transcript of Records from the University where you graduated from college and  (2) official letter from your school that they are using English as a medium of Instruction so that you don't have to take the TOEFL exam and your  (3) transcript from highschool.

Then, go to the school's (where you plan to attend) Admission's office and asked for an application form. The school catalog and handbook should be given to you for free so that you can decide on what courses you are going to take and how you can manage your hours.   The checklist to get in the school should be included in the application form.   This checklist is not for the nursing program yet.   You need to apply to get in the school first before applying the nursing program.
It includes:

1. Official Transcript of Records from high school or college attended, or GED score send directly to the Office of Admissions.

2. Test Scores from 1 of the following: THEA, ACCUPLACER, ASSET, COMPASS, ACT, or SAT.

3. Completed Vaccination Records.

4. Permanent Resident Card at least 2 years resident (if you're in Texas) otherwise they will have you pay for the student tax and out-of-state tax which is ridiculous).

5. Social Security Card, State I.D. or Driver’s License.

6. Completed school application form for Admission.

The school should have some approved listings of agencies where you can send your TOR to be evaluated (course by course) for US equivalency.  I did mine at WECS (Worldwide Education Consultant Services) via mail in Brownsville.  I think they have a branch in Houston.  I paid $150 for 2 copies, one copy for me and one for the school.  School copy should have it send directly to the Office of Admissions.  I got the result after 2 days.

Then your Test Scores. ( THEA, or ACCUPLACER, or ACT).  Don't start panicking! alright.  If you have a degree in the Philippines, you're fine!  Your degree in the Philippines will save you from this dreaded tests.  I was exempt from taking these tests because of my BS Bio degree.  The report stated that my B.S. Biology degree is equivalent to B.S. Biology here in the U.S. and got a GPA of 3.45 in a 4.0 scale.

Vaccination.  Tetanus (TD), Hepatitis B series, MMR, Varicella (chicken pox). Make sure you keep your vaccination and immunization records because that is the very first thing the school is going to asked from you when you apply for the nursing program.

To get exempt from student tax, you need to provide a document stating your residency such as your Green Card.  A letter from your employer stating your residency is also very helpful if you are currently working.

I got an acceptance letter from the school (South Texas College) on March, 2006 and immediately asked for an appointment to see an LVN-RN adviser.  They are very helpful.  LVN is same as LPN.  In Texas, they call it LVN.   The adviser told me that the selection criteria for the nursing program will be based on a GPA point system, courses completed,  work experience and/ or health fields certificate (e.g. EMT, PTCA, DA, MA, etc).  Maximum points to be able to get in the program is 14.  In my school, they started accepting applications in January until last week of February.  Obviously, I didn’t get to submit my application for the program because its already March.  So basically, I have one full year to start making my points.

Summer of June, 2006 I took Medical Terminology. The class is fairly easy.   I manage to make an A and still keeping my job.  For the past 2 years, I’ve been working as a naturalist in a local nature center.  When I finished the summer class, I applied the Patient Care Assistant Program (21 credit hours).  I got accepted to start the Fall semester (Aug- Dec.  2006). My classes include Nurse Aide for Health Org., Patient Care,  and  Anatomy and Physiology for Allied Health for the first half  and Patient Care Tech, Phlebotomy, EKG Tech for the second half.  The classes was very  intensed but i'm loving it.  You will learn a lot because the knowledge that you learned is actually very helpful in everyday situations.   I tried so hard to bugged the admissions offices of crediting my upper level classes such as Anatomy and Physiology (I have no idea how many A&P  i took when I was in college), Histology,  Genetics, Microbiology, Bio Research, Parasitology, Pharmacology,  and all the ...logy  you can think of in science. haha!  BUT, they only credit my lower level classes such as:  College Algrebra, English 1&2, World literature,  Spanish 1&2,  Computer  1&2,  etc... stuff like that.  grrr.....  Eventually, upper level classes will be credited if Im going for BSN.   Well, it doesn’t hurt to take another Anatomy and Physiology.  Sure enough,  the class is no sweat... I made an A in all my classes during the Fall Semester especially that most of the subjects were kind of overlapping.
Dec. of 2006, I took the state licensure exam for nursing aide ( Writing and Skills) and got my license after 2 weeks and was hired at John Knox Med. Center last Jan. 2007.

All together I have 13 points, enough to make me qualify for the nursing program.  I applied the LVN program last Jan. and got my acceptance letter after 3 months. Out of 600+,  80 applicants where selected.  I felt lucky.  I work to get some experience in Gerontology for 4 months before I quit and visited the Philippines during the summer.   But before we took the trip, I submitted my clearance:

1. Drug Test
2. Vaccination and Immunization Record (Diptheria-Tetanus, Complete Hepatitis  B series, MMR, & Varicella).
3. TB shot.
4. CPR certification from American Heart Association.
5. Health Insurance
6. Social Security Card, State I.D. or Driver’s License, and Green Card.
7. Criminal Background Check.

I was cleared when I was in PTCA program, So, they have my clearance on file and was carry-on  when I got accepted in the nursing program.

So, now im in the program and Im loving it.  Lots and lots of reading.  Most of them are critical thinking and all that good stuff.  I am planning to do the transition once I finished in Dec. of next year.  LVN-RN transition as they call it.
Getting back to school here in the US can be very frustrating.   Just keep the fate going and before you know it, you will be done.

Im not dead

I haven't been posting for almost 3 weeks... have I been that busy???  School is keeping me off the blogging world that's why.   There's a lot of reading to do in the nursing school.  Exams seems to be endless and I hate when there's only 10 questions being asked.  An A grade ranges from 92 to 100 so you see why im sticking my nose into my books.  Next week, will start going to the clinical sites;  that means I have to get up super early.  Niceee!

Oh yeah!  I have a classmate who is a filipino and we're on thesame section, not only that, she's Bisaya from Bohol.  In class, we're pretty much isolated in our own world.  lol   Anyway, its nice to have someone around you who speak thesame language.  She's very sweet and very mature for a 21 years old.  I'll see if I can get a picture of her and me and will share to ya'll if I won't forget.

Gotta go... for lunch, yummmm!

Rain!

Its raining men, hallelujah!

I love the rain... makes our grass greener and saves water too!  Actually rain water is much better for plants than our tap water.  Plants appreciate rain water so much! so am I!

Church was great!  Its the first Sabbath of the month... that means its general fellowship lunch but we didn't stayed.  Then it rained later in the afternoon.   An inch and a half is not too bad at all.  Thanks Papa Jesus!

back to school

  • My mood:
  • Music: Do it by Nelly Furtado

I'm on my 2nd year and need to haul more books than ever before.  But im lovin' school.  Its never too late to learn new things and what's out there!

Well, let me tell you what happend to me yesterday when I got out of school.  I came home only to find out that I left my house key and there's no way to get in.  I call my husband but his phone was off... of course!  I figured he's having a class, so I call the school secretary and left a message.  After 10 minutes my phone rang.  We are both laughing.   I told him that Im watching the squirrels away from our pecan trees and may be do some watering, might as well... right?!!  His class will soon be over... so I hang on.  He arrived after 20 minutes!

I'll say this out loud... it will never happen again!

Happy Sabbath

  • My mood:
  • Music: Bananarama

The church is back to its regular service since the Academy students are back for another school year.  Regular classes will start on Monday.  We were invited to have dinner at our church pastor's house but we already made plans for the rest of the day. We didn't even get to take a nap!

The church program today was arranged by the women's ministries. The speaker today was a hospice chaplain who lived at Fort Worth, she talks about physical and spiritual pain.  I am intrigue of working in a hospice facility but sure will consider the option, will see....  I am still a long ways away.

Nocturnal Cactus

  • My mood:
  • Music: Gym Class Heroes

One of the things that my husband and I have in common is that we are both fond of cacti.  I've been collecting cactus even before we met. I think they are interesting and require less care.  My husband has a wide collection of exotic ones but a bunch of them was stolen.  Im glad we still have quite a few left in the back yard.

We took this picture in in the middle of the night because its the only time to see the full bloom flower.  I honestly forgot the name of this one but I'll ask Dan when he gets back.

Gotta nap!
